What Do Oil Numbers Mean?

   Oils are separated from each other according to their numbers. The numbers used while making this distinction are measured based on the viscosity value. Viscosity is defined as the resistance of a fluid to flow. In other words, it means that the fluid flows easily or difficultly. To give an example of this situation, when we compare the honey and water put in 2 different containers and turn the containers upside down, the flow rates will noticeably differ. Honey will flow more slowly, and its resistance to flowing will be greater. This means that the viscosity ratio is higher.

   Number 38 oil is more fluid and thinner than oil number 46. As the number of oils increases, the thickness increases. These numbers represent the viscosity value of oils at 40 degrees Celsius.

   Another numbering is in the form of 10W40. The most common oil numbers are as follows. Here, the 10W numbering refers to the value of the fluidity of the oil in cold weather. The lower this number, the more fluidity it will have during the winter months. Numbering 40W represents another value that indicates the fluidity of the oil under high temperature. The higher this value, the more fluid the oil will have at high temperatures.
